New book started today:

“From the very first days of the war, Putin and the Russian security elite ostentatiously demonstrated their disdain for the laws of war, their scorn for international law and for treaties they themselves had signed. They arrested public officials and civic leaders: mayors, police officers, civil servants, school directors, journalists, artists, museum curators. They built torture chambers for civilians in most of the towns they occupied in southern and eastern Ukraine. They kidnapped thousands of children, ripping some away from their families, removing others from orphanages, gave them new “Russian” identities, and prevented them from returning home to Ukraine.”

Just completed and I highly recommend.

Pretty unsettling stuff, but good to be aware of how our democracies are being undermined (and very effectively)

I am currently reading Nexus by YNL and that’s also the theme. Democracies are messy but they are much better than autocracies / dictatorships

Absolutely - Democracies are absolutely messy, but worth continuing to fight for and improving. Autocracies try to frame democracies as full of corruption, etc to make citizens cynical and think they're not worth protecting/preserving so that autocratic ideals can take deeper hold and push their anti-democratic agenda. I'll check out Nexus - thanks for sharing!
