Are pigeons and doves from the same family but different species? Or are the words used interchangeably and they're all pigeons?

"pigeon" and "dove" are interchangeable terms. In fact, the original generic name for the pigeon we see on the city street is "rock dove" because they are cliff dwelling doves from the Mediterranean region.

Rock doves are the OG pigeon, for sure! I consider them the Punk Rock doves of the bird world!

Thank you for clarifying.  Have heard the term rock dove as well but thought they were the “original” pigeon. 😂
