Humanity: A Privacy-Friendly Identity Verification Solution for Web3 Founded in late 2023, Humanity is a blockchain network designed to counter Sybil attacks by providing developers with a unique human identity verification mechanism while granting users full ownership of their data and identities. At its core, the project employs innovative palm print recognition technology, a less invasive and more privacy-preserving alternative to traditional fingerprint recognition or controversial iris scanning methods (e.g., WorldCoin). With just a smartphone, users can easily complete the identity verification process, significantly lowering the barrier to entry while enhancing both security and convenience.

The Humanity Protocol’s identity verification process consists of two stages. The first stage utilizes palm print recognition to create a unique biometric signature for each user. The second stage introduces an off-chain manual verification mechanism, where decentralized verifiers confirm identities without exposing sensitive personal information and upload standardized results to the blockchain. This dual-layered process ensures both verification accuracy and robust privacy protection. The protocol addresses critical challenges such as Sybil attacks, identity fraud, privacy breaches, and centralization risks. Its innovative features include palm print recognition, a hybrid on-chain/off-chain verification mechanism, a self-sovereign identity (SSI) framework, and cross-chain interoperability.

The project was founded by experienced tech entrepreneur Terence Kwok and is backed by industry leaders such as Yat Siu, Chairman of Animoca Brands, and Sandeep Nailwal, Co-founder of Polygon. In February 2024, Humanity completed a strategic funding round with investments from over 20 institutions, including Hashed, CMCC, and Mechanism Capital. In May 2024, the project secured $30 million in a seed funding round at a valuation of $1 billion, with leading investors such as Kingsway Capital, Animoca Brands, and Blockchain.com participating. Additionally, in the same month, LayerZero Labs joined Humanity Protocol’s validator node network, employing zero-knowledge proofs (ZK Proof) for credential verification to further enhance privacy and data security.
