I have a penchant for finding obscure vertical bowed instruments. Partially because it causes me neck pain to play the violin in recent years. Also tried the cello (which I love), but I was difficult for me to play with a weak pinky (small) finger. The smaller one on the left here is a bowed dulcimer and it is tuned like a viola. The one on the right is a treble viola da gamba that I rented last year. It has 6 strings and is tuned in 4ths and a 3rd rather than 5ths like the violin family (also viola range). It has gut strings and is usually played in 415 hz. I might try a larger version of that one (tenor) if available to rent this year. Or maybe I should just rent a small cello again.
