Bitcoin developers have revealed details of a high-severity software bug affecting over 13% of home and business computers worldwide that enforce Bitcoin’s rules. The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2024-35202, allows for a remote shutdown of Bitcoin nodes running Core software versions earlier than 25.0. Attackers can remotely exploit a flaw in the software's handling of block transaction ('blocktxn') messages. Niklas Gögge is credited with discovering and disclosing the bug, as well as providing the patch implemented in Bitcoin Core v25.0.
