I actually like what you said, 

It probably contributes to those scores but I feel like people are focused on those scores as a means of "success" while others feel like it's a "keep the top at the top" mentality.

If the variables are defined like you stated the information in the end should be close to the same. This should also alleviate any feedback that the study was biased etc.
