In 1997, Murphy’s Irish Stout released an ad using a unique blend of Irish branding and Japanese animation. Produced by Japanese studio Production I.G, known for Ghost in the Shell, the ad brought a cyberpunk edge to beer marketing. Its bold visuals, cinematic storytelling, and high-quality animation made it stand out in the world of advertising.

This ad was a bold collaboration between Irish and Japanese creatives, showcasing how anime could be used to market to a global audience. Anime hadn’t quite hit the mainstream in Ireland at this stage, so combining anime with an old Irish stout was an interesting move, however the ad’s distinctive style and innovative approach cemented its place as a cult classic in both Irish advertising and animation history.
