Felt, an American, took a big step forward by inventing a device called "Comptometer" This device had various buttons that could be used to perform mathematical calculations, and it is considered the first successful example of a calculator with keys

However, the Comptometer was primarily a mechanical calculator rather than what we now think of as a computer.
