where does the $degen i have been sent show up - i created an mm wallet with my seedphrase and checked mainnet and base

what am i missing

Not dumb. 
It will show up in your mm wallet on base BUT not until you claim it on the site degen.tips 

BUT, you can only claim tips once a month at the end of each month. So wait a week and connect your base wallet to the site to claim, then anything you’ve accumulated so far should appear.
