By examining colorectal cancer samples, researchers found that the iron in red meat reactivates the telomerase enzyme through an iron-sensitive protein called pyrin, which causes cancer to progress. Telomeres are located at the end of chromosomes and are made of DNA and protein sequences and are needed for cell division. With each cell division, telomeres become shorter and shorter until cells cannot divide anymore. Tissues age when cells cannot divide, but telomerase enzyme can regenerate telomeres to restore cell division.
