Probably thanks to the Institute of Justice's (some libertarian leaning badass lawyers) ongoing lawsuit, the US Deputy AG has suspended the DEA's organized crime operation at the nation's airports. When I say organized crime operation, I don't mean the DEA was investigating crime, they were doing the crime and stealing cash from travelers with no due process. Something as stupid as if you bought your ticket within 48 hours of boarding, would make you a target for warrantless searches and cash seizure with no charges filed. Civil asset forfeiture is not only unconstitutional but incredibly immoral. They really do run it like the mob would too. Everyone gets their cut, from the confidential source airline employee who calls them when you buy a ticket too close to departure (has the DEA ever heard of a family emergency?), to the county/city, the state, and the feds at the top get the most. https://www.reuters.com/legal/us-suspends-controversial-asset-forfeiture-program-targeting-airline-travelers-2024-11-21/

Yes, the DEA is incentivized to mug airport passengers of their cash without due process. Law enforcement has really become more about generating revenue than solving crime.

Straight up, they are state sanctioned pirates. Can you imagine how little actual crime w/ actual victims there would be if 100% of law enforcement resources was directed towards preventing and solving such crimes as theft, murder, rape, and assault? Instead half of murders go unsolved, rape kits go untested, but they find the time to rob people and to throw people in prison for possessing or selling unauthorized substances and plants.
