There is an important distinction to be made between social media and content platforms. Over time the lines have gotten blurred - maybe time for social to make a comeback?

I think blurring those lines is the whole point. The revealed preference is that people want to socialize around media. 

In every group chat I’m in, conversation sparks around content. Same is true on the platforms themselves, but at scale. 

“Social” is dead — long live social.

yes and no there are definitely social networks also forming around creators over content (particularly youtube or twitch).

the people are consuming content
if it weren’t for the content, nobody would be interacting with the creators (or one another)
