This work was commissioned by the Augustinian monks of San Donato a Scopeto in Florence. Although Leonardo began this painting in 1481, it remained unfinished. The painting is notable for its intricate composition and detailed depiction of the figures surrounding the Holy Family.

Augustine's rational account of justice begins with the theological concepts of God and the kingdom and ends with the concepts of human corruption, government, and ownership.
