For ages, web3-react has been my go to library for wallet connection. This is simply because it is the first library (I know) that gives that you absolute control of your connectors and UI. I'm in active search for a worthy alternative as it is no longer being maintained and most importantly has no EIP-6963 support.

Wagmi with its built in connectors looks cool (haven't tried it through), but I don't like the fact that it's dependent on viem. I want something that works with any library. Any recommendations?

Nothing. I like viem, but we use ethers at the place where I work.
