A nerd snipe is a special case of human vulnerability: getting tunnel visioned into some side quest. In some ways, it’s like other snipes: status – clout, prestige FOMO – hype, trends emotion – outrage, drama, rabbit holes Nerds just get sniped by ideas and tech. Same circuit, different bait? Not really. Status, fomo, and emotions come from variations of mimetic desire—people don’t just want things; they want what others want. A nerd snipe is different. It’s not about imitating who desires something, but how they desire—nerds model curiosity itself. The mimetic hook isn’t prestige or belonging; it’s the gravitational pull of an interesting problem, and the allure of skill and knowledge.

”For too long the crypto economy was an isolated atoll, with vibrant native customs but few exports to the rest of the world. A token for increasing leverage in trading NFTs? An interesting practice, but probably not one that’s going to reshape global commerce. Stablecoins, though, are an immensely important export to the rest of the world.“ via the Stripe annual letter 🔗

A favorite recent Substack essay: https://substack.com/home/post/p-148244657 tl;dr most of the time we learn simply to get the surface details we need to sound smart; actual learning takes much more effort, intention, and structure, and is far rarer and more valuable.

Most modern at-scale social networks were bootstrapped from strong, existing *IRL* networks - Facebook w Ivy League - LinkedIn w Valley execs - Twitter w SXSW in ATX, blogger & tech scenes in SF / NY Strong IRL networks catalyze digital ones, and Farcaster could bootstrap further w/ IRL presence at more frontier tech events

How much do airdrop farmers make? The weirdest thing about crypto is nobody (tmk) has earnestly studied this economy.

For decades people thought running a 4 minute mile was impossible — until Roger Bannister crushed it. Then many others did. Similar thing when SpaceX proved private cos could reach orbit. What's the equivalent of breaking the four minute mile for crypto?

A good way to assess someone's product intuition is to evaluate their generative vs. evaluative thinking. Generative thinkers see possibilities everywhere—the ppl who instantly envision 10 new features from the latest iOS dev kit. Evaluative thinkers excel at sharpening ideas, spotting flaws, and improving them. The best product minds balance both, but most people lean toward one. Cultivating both mindsets is key to better product thinking.

For all the current doubt, Ethereum is digital culture’s Fifth Avenue. Josh Kushner’s investing playbook: “Own property on Fifth Ave.” There will be other great streets, but none with the same prestige, liquidity, and staying power.

Feels like crypto is trending heavily toward either “definite pessimism” (aka PvP nihilism) or “indefinite optimism” (“bring the world onchain”) according to the Thiel matrix. We need more definite optimism.

Question for folks who worked on stablecoins early: What did Bridge (and others) see or were able to solve with a global orchestration platform that others before them missed?

1/ Still processing the last 48 hours, but one thing is certain: we’re standing at the edge of a new era for crypto. Having navigated the Biden SEC's openly hostile stance on digital assets, I'm more optimistic than ever about the years ahead. The landscape is shifting, and the potential for real innovation is finally coming into focus. As @balajis.eth points out, the Overton Window isn’t just moving — it has been smashed. The question is no longer whether tokens are permissible. The question is: Can they be better? More transparent systems. Stronger alignment of incentives. A fairer, more open distribution of opportunity and value. These aren't just lofty goals but the benchmarks by which tokens will prove themselves superior to many of the systems we know today. And the tools being built right now are bringing these ideals into reality.

If you loved skateboarding, the internet, punk, rap music, tattoos, digital art, graffiti, zine culture, underground raves, or indie game dev before they were cool to the mainstream, you’re likely into onchain culture now. I've met so many bonafide legends from these subcultures quietly hanging out, basking in the scene. The same DIY spirit, the same 'fuck around and find out' energy, the same creative chaos. History doesn't repeat, but it sure does rhyme.
