the last month, have had a good amount of people unsubscribing to /toc newsletter and I'm actually happy about this now. there were a lot of people subbing back during frames/degen hype bc it's so easy w /paragraph frame but that caused my open rate to go down...them leaving is helping improve quality of subs again

As I'm reading the Chip War, realizing that eastern strategy (i.e. Japan / Russia) was to simply copy or steal designs and then make the production process 10x more efficient. Which is not "bad" - Japan's strength was micro optimizing and working really long hours. And they were also pretty good at identifying consumer products (i.e. walkman) that would pop off. But every critical innovative electrical engineering design all happened in the US with the help of DARPA. Also, Intel / Fairchild narrative always gets the spotlight bc they were more consumer facing, but now I'm realizing how crucial TI was to the early chip industry...they just went a more government focused route.

Wrote some thoughts on the new channels update that's coming. tl;dr definitely think it makes sense to lean into the "cozy corners" over the broader "hashtag" channels. Seems like the question when casting will now be if you're trying have a nuanced convo w friends or just posting as you would on Twitter. There's some channels that are clearly hashtags such as /books /founders that will need to niche down. And there are some today that are clearly cozy corners such as /latenightcrew /six. But it'll be interesting to see how the "middle" channels will adapt. For example, how do subtle topics such as /techarchive or location channels like /new-york or company channels like /paragraph look like? In the short term, there will definitely be chaos, pushback, etc. But in the long run, the corners should keep new users engaged long enough to "hook" them. THE MOST IMPORTANT part of this channels update will be reducing the friction of finding homes new users resonate with https://terminallyonchain.xyz/cozycorners

i also appreciate @pichi take on how the new changes have been not so great for artists, definitely a valid point regardless of the success of the app, etc. not something I thought of as a creator myself as well but good callout. seems like @jacque was trying to say something similar as well
