I actually think our healthcare system is generally pretty good, but here seems to be a major (the major?) issue:
A doctors office can tell you that they accept your insurance, but when you go in for a treatment, it’s unknown how much will be covered by insurance, if anything.
One of the reasons for this is that there are two different prices, an insurance price and a cash price.
A $10,000 bill may be covered 100% by insurance, 0%, or anything in between.
If insurance covers any %, you must pay the rest. If insurance doesn’t cover it, the doctor may offer you a cash price, which could be a few hundred dollars, rather than $10K.
However, if insurance covers $1, you still owe the $9,999 and cannot be offered the cash price.
It’s above my knowledge how this system got put in place, but it seems like there should be one price that everyone knows before they get treatment. 1 reply
