i've been working on a pen-and-paper mechanism test for building an AI-powered tool for helping users think critically while using the tool to write reasoned arguments (so #meta, i know). the pen-and-paper mechanisms were designed to explore different UX for human-AI interaction when developing arguments. they worked really well with users in settings ranging from college students to employees at a public utility. i've been working on the next step, which is turning the pen-and-paper mechanisms into something which loops in LLMs in a socratic mirror sense. hacky af, but it actually works enough to be live-testable 🎉. you can read more about the project here: https://vaughntan.org/aiux

First post on Substack! Actually my first piece of organized writing I’ve ever put out that wasn’t an assignment or an application. And I got my first subscriber, too, which is surreal. It’s fulfilling on a level that feels noble, you deem my words are worth reading? After working on it a bit, I think I know a good pace for me now. To have time to think and craft, I can probably do solid 7500 solid words a month, ready for editor. So for a 75000 word book I think I'd need about 10 months of writing and 6 months editing and revision.

I need a new writing tool. I used to love mind maps. The difficulty I'm having is that for longer form pieces, say over 2500 words, I lose track of what I've covered where. I've tried Obsidian/Zettlekasten and Roam Research. They are fine by I miss the big overhead view to keep things organized, but maybe I'm missing some key tools. Working toward an 80k word book so need to get a handle on managing large writing projects.f Any ideas?

Today, I am doing editing on my own work, which is something I absolutely despise doing. However, there is no money for an editor, so we carry on. Maybe someday, when we make it big, we can hire an editor. Still incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be writing this piece to begin with. Can't wait for you all to see it when it's done!
