Feeling completely down and out isn't just about being sad. It's when the "why bother" question takes up permanent residence in your brain, refusing to leave. Life's purpose, that thing that's supposed to get you out of bed in the morning, has checked out: You don't have a plan. You're just existing, watching the world spin by from the passenger seat of your own life. When you're in this state, the absence of motivation feels less like a choice and more like a heavy blanket you can't throw off. It's a deep-seated feeling of being adrift, and the only way to escape it is to find one tiny thing to care about again. Just one small reason to get up, and let that be the thread you pull on to start unraveling the despair.
