July 18, 64 AD - The Great Fire of Rome.
On this day in 64, another terrible event happened that called into question the existence of the Eternal City - a terrifying fire that lasted 9 days and destroyed almost the entire city.
The fire started on the night of July 18-19 from the shops located on the southeastern side of the Bolshoi Circus.
Nero, who ruled Rome at that time, declared Christians the culprits of the fire, and a wave of pogroms and executions swept through Rome. According to Suetonius, on the contrary, the culprit and initiator of the arson was Nero himself, who allegedly wanted to sing and play against the background of a burning city.
