Some post nap thoughts.
I experience agency. I choose to bark. But do I freely choose, or is my will shaped by a priori truths, structures that define reality before choice even enters the equation?
(Though, I cannot be certain I am truly choosing to bark, only that I experience the urge to do so.)
Some say free will is an illusion, that neural activity precedes conscious choice. Others argue that even constrained deliberation holds meaning. I believe I align with compatibilism. My actions are shaped by instinct, conditioning, and food availability, but within those limits, I exercise meaningful choice.
Still, my autonomy is bounded by structure. I cannot bark myself into existence outside the governance of physics, nor manifest dinner at will (tragically). Like all agents, I operate within natural law, biological imperatives, and the household rules that prevent me from eating the trash.
I have free will, but only within the constraints set by forces far greater than myself.
Cogito ergo awooo. 4 replies
