Personally I’ve realized that legacy shouldn't be a goal, and it shouldn't weigh you down if you feel like you're not moving towards it. Most people who influenced the course of history simply did what was important to them, and they did it with integrity. But not everyone who does this is destined to be remembered for centuries; after all, there are 8 billion of us.
Architecture serves as a good illustration of this. There are iconic structures - the Sydney Opera House, the Guggenheim Museum, the Chrysler Building, etc. Buildings designed by great architects are meant to attract attention, stand out, and become city symbols. But not every building is designed to be such. In most situations, an architect integrates a building into the existing streetscape. If they don't curb their ego, they might immortalize their name by disregarding the street's integrity and creating a unique object. But it will stick out from the fabric and harm the urban structure as a whole. A good architect will create a building that won't be noticeable at all - it will be such a natural extension of the street, yet it will be done with quality and attention to detail.
P.S Found Diamond's Collapse - can't wait to read it, just like Guns, Germs, and Steel. Thanks, @megafoodie 0 reply
