A close friend sent me a voice note, an impromptu song she had recorded in a rush of inspiration. By the time I could respond, during a layover, she had already slipped into self-doubt, convinced it wasn’t good enough. Yet it was beautiful, truly beautiful, and I told her so the very first moment I could.
It made me think about how delicate we become when we dare to step into vulnerability and share ourselves openly. Even with our closest and most welcoming friends, we sometimes shrink at the thought of revealing too much, of not being liked, or worse - being rejected.
Did you know that the word vulnerability comes from the Latin vulnerare, meaning “to wound”? To me, being vulnerable is exactly that - stepping into the world, or offering something of ourselves, while remaining open to the possibility of being wounded. And yet, the real magic happens there too. When we meet reality in this way, with openness instead of defense, the world has a way of responding and reorienting itself around us.
We humans are more fragile than we like to admit and this is why we need our safety nets in the world - people who encourage us when we most need it. People who can hold our hand as we grow into new skin and take risks. People who love us. 9 replies
