Kim Kardashian travelled to Mexico to get MUSE stem cells for shoulder pain after injury and after successful resolution went back for chronic back pain. MUSE cells are lab-selected subset of stem cells ‘multilineage-differentiating stress-enduring”. More detailed: they are a rare subpopulation within adult mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). They’re enriched either by survival under severe cellular stress or by immunoselection. Beauty of MUSE cells is they show tri-lineage differentiation potential (ecto/meso/endo), and express pluripotency-associated markers. Makes them very diverse in application where other stem cells have to be for specific purpose. But they are also very rare and hard to get. interesting biology with early human data in neuro/cardiac disease out of Japan (attached screenshot and link below), but no randomized trials for orthopedic pain and no FDA approval in the U.S. Already the market for stem cells, especially MUSE, has been over saturated recently and this will put it into hyperdrive. The stem cell hunger games have begun. On another note, this is just the beginning for medical tourism take the next step in going from an elective option to a necessary solution unable to be obtained in the US.
