But while cleaning, they accidentally make too much of a sleepy chemical called GABA. GABA tells the brain workers to slow down or stop, which isn’t good when you need to think or remember things. Scientists have found that an enzyme named SIRT2 tells the astrocytes to make more GABA. So, if we can find a way to quiet down SIRT2, the astrocytes won’t make too much GABA, and the brain workers can keep doing their jobs well. This discovery is exciting because it gives us a new idea for helping people with Alzheimer’s disease feel better by keeping their brain city clean and active.

Excuse me while I geek out about health tech for a minute! It’s exciting to see how the landscape is evolving, with real strides being made in using quality health data to deliver value-based care. I had a moment where I realized that many of the theories and conversations we once had at Bloomberg School of Public Health about best practices for the future are now being put into practice in real-world settings. It’s incredible to see how far we’ve come, not just from an academic standpoint, but also from a business perspective.

I work as an occupational therapist at an inpatient psychiatric hospital. Last year I came up with an idea after watching the Great British Baking Show with my wife… The Ultimate Baking Championship Groups of patients, supervised by their respective OT, will bake up their best dessert ideas to see who will be the UBC Winner. My first group will attempt baking a carrot cake this morning. Wish us luck 🤞

I do a lot of work in public health; my team delivers vaccines [COVID, flu - soon Hepatitis]; health screenings for diabetes. We’re next going to add dental exams. It’s really sad [but also rewarding] to meet people without any healthcare in rural communities.
