Saddest thing about this is that nobody is even slightly surprised, not just at the chat, but at the “kids being dumb” dismissal from Vance etc (as someone pointed out, the leader of the chat is only a couple of years younger than Vance). They’ve just updated the “troubled young boy who needs counseling” defense of school shooters. You can *maybe*overlook this in an 18-year old with no power or connection to politics. Not in a political feeder org. Just because it’s an edgelord verbal contest doesn’t mean it isn’t exactly as effective at dehumanizing the people being talked about as if it were in earnest, or desensitizing the speakers too. Either way it prepares the ground for much worse future inhumanity, and lowers threshold for activation of terrible things. Cynicism is a form of ideology, as Zizek. So is “ironic” dehumanization. There is a great line from Poirot in Death on the Nile, “do not let evil into your heart.” There is a Dorian Gray type deep corruption that starts seeping into your soul when you let yourself go down this slippery slope. If I could see that at 19, so can most people. You don’t need to be a moral genius. People I knew who were like this at 19, turned into exactly the shitty adults you’d expect. Chances of redemption arc near zero. These people don’t need counseling. Or if they do, they can seek it out themselves. What they need is to be implacably hounded out of public life and all hopes of political careers. Rational people pick their battles against a powerful adversary, but if the powerful adversary can simply open one front after another at little to no cost, it’s effectively a sibyl attack. The besieged party is perceived by consensus as “losing” and pays the compounding costs of that perception, because the ratio of picked to avoided battles keeps falling so it looks like they’re losing more and more. If they score a rare victory, it is swamped out. This is not quite like a DDoS attack. They’re not overwhelmed. Their reputation is hijacked by a party that can do unlimited damage to it at low cost. I know nothing about Lisa Monaco or why she has a target on her back, but it’s clearly going to be hard for her to do her job regardless of how this goes.
