I think your point re student loan debt is well taken, coincides with housing costs etc.

When we prepared to marry, there was never any plan besides > joint account and a marriage of our finances 

We were both blessed to be debt free, paying off our school loans post college pretty quickly (easier without advanced degrees) - she worked 2-3 jobs at one point to pay off her debt.
