While searching for the oldest fossil record of hummingbirds, I just learned that modern hummingbirds only exist in the Americas. They are not found on any other continents. However, the oldest hummingbird fossils have been unearthed in Europe (~30 million years ago). Meanwhile, we don’t have hummingbird fossils in the Americas older than 10,000 years. Evolutionary biologists haven’t figured out how to explain this hummingbird history. There are theories, but none that satisfy people who study this topic. One theory is that hummingbirds crossed over on the former land bridge between Siberia and Alaska. It’s a better explanation than migrating across an entire ocean. But it doesn’t explain why the hummingbirds wouldn’t just go to Asia or Africa before disappearing from Europe. It’s also possible they existed on more continents but we just lack the fossil records to prove it. Today there are over 300 recognized species of hummingbirds which have co-evolved with specific flowers. And they are still continuing to evolve.
