Kind of want to upgrade my iPhone 14 to a 17. I don’t know if I will but I will share with you my internal debate:
Lightning → USB-C
(counter: I almost exclusively wireless charge and airdrop)
Notch → Dynamic Island
(it’s awesome, but not meaningful in my day to day)
No function buttons → Action button + Camera Control
(would likely use both but it wouldn’t save that much time daily)
No onboard AI → Apple Intelligence
(I remain optimistic about on-device intelligence, long term, but I doubt it’s able to meaningfully impact my day to day for another 6-12 months, so no rush)
60hz → 120hz promotion
(don’t know if I would notice)
Dual 12MP cameras, all digital zoom → Dual 48MP cameras, all optical zoom, with macro
(this is probably the biggest meaningful change for me. I went from 11 Pro to 14 regular and the loss of macro and good zoom hurt)
In general I feel like 3 generations is a good upgrade cadence, where the improvements are noticeable. And my phone is worth several hundred trade in and even more resale. So I’m genuinely considering it.
But another side of me thinks, keep the phone you have, and maybe even leave the door open to go android (degoogled of course).
What do you think? By the way I’m not considering Pro or Air: they’re too expensive, and frankly too big for my taste. 1 reply
