People create art and music because they love the medium and have chosen it to express their personality and creativity; and as a society we agree that what these things say about our culture and ideas implicitly gives them meaning. To me there's something perfect about mathematics. It doesn't hide itself from you. You simply lock in and explore the essential landscape. A proof is both a discovery and an explanation, and while some mystery may remain surrounding what mathematics exactly is and why it relates to the real world, most of the mystery is in whether or not the things we know are actually just special cases of something more general. I love mathematics because its qualities make reasoning about things beautiful in a wholly unique way, and I can't imagine not wanting to see that beauty. As a modern medium for cultural expression, math is pretty fringe, but the fringe is where most creativity and culture are found.
