GM It’s a bit funny how it takes almost half a lifetime to have hard evidence of what our elders taught us. Even though the answers were always obvious. Life is a teacher, they say, but a weird one. It arrives only when the student is ready; it’s not the other way round.

In a different world, I would hope life is kinder to me at the start. It’s brave to fight, it’s nice to be able to rise through the odds and win some battles. But life leaves its scars. Always. And just when you think you cheated life, that you went through it all and emerged fine, there is a siren somewhere waiting to take you back to the crime scene. When you look at a scar, you see healing. But a scar is also evidence of things that shouldn’t have been. Imperfection is useful; it signals skin in the game, but it’s also exhausting— once there is a crack in the wall, even a flash of lightning triggers the homeowner. Once the world has its mark on you, it always has a way of reminding you that there’s still work to be done.

Evolution has shaped us with perception symbols. We should take them seriously, but not literally. This is what creatives deeply understand. They see a broader ‘reality’ and so their ideas change the world as we know it. What we call reality is simply a user-friendly interface.
