Also, the hero of this book, a puzzle solver named Mike Brink, has something called Savant syndrome, which is a real life disorder where someone who has had a traumatic brain injury develops extraordinary skills. In this case, the ability to self puzzles!

Last year, I went to Japan and did research on all of the locations that you’ll find in my novel the puzzle box. so there are so many scenes and plot points that are inspired by things that I saw when I was in Japan. The imperial Palace, which is in the novel, for example.

Hi— thanks for the question. First of all, I lived in Japan for two years, so I’ve been trying to find a way to write about Japan for a while. Second of all, puzzle boxes! The kind of puzzle box that is in the novel is made in Hakone Japan and is gorgeous to look at as well as being a difficult puzzle.
