while I'm being a n00b what is the difference between Farcaster and Warpcast are they friends? do they hang out together? is Warpcast living in Farcaster's house? does he pay rent? what's the deal

An analogy... Farcaster is email (the technology, aka the "protocol") and Warpcast is Gmail (the software built on top, aka the "client"). No rent need be paid. Anyone can build their own client on top of Farcaster (ala Hotmail, etc etc), charge for it as they like.

https://www.supercast.xyz/ is an example of a desktop first client built on Farcaster. https://recaster.org/ is a mobile-first client that has it's own listing in the app store. One cool thing is that Farcaster provides the building blocks for anyone to use to build social apps without having to request permission from the creators. So unlike Twitter, Facebook, etc, they can't just shut the door later on and kill all the dev projects.
