this seems to imply that the monetary value *does* matter to you - am i misinterpreting?

from my POV:

merkle isn't telling anyone 1) that they have to give or 2) who to give to - that's all the choice of the tipper, and they could also choose not to tip at all

merkle is making gifting easier if you want to do it

I like gifts and recognition.

A single dollar which is worth less than any gift would cost today does not feel like a gift or magic to me.

E.g. a single strawberry may cost $1 today, but the act of care of choosing to give to me creates more than $1 in value. 

A dollar tip Merkle is telling you to give me and post about feels cheap and overly financialized.
