paypal succeeded not because they figured out payments, but because they figured out fraud detection perhaps farcaster / warpcast will succeed not from figuring out decentralized social, but from figuring out bot detection better than anyone else

If they figure out real post-by-post tipping they can do well.

I would posit it was (1) paying users to signup & (2) solving EBay's payment problems. I don't think their fraud detection has ever been more exceptional than the rest of the field, if anything they've had more bad PR for dispute resolution over the years. https://www.businessinsider.com/peter-thiel-paypal-paid-customers-2014-9#:~:text=%22Prospective%20deals%20with%20big%20banks,pay%20people%20to%20sign%20up.%22&text=We%20gave%20new%20customers%20%2410,and%20an%20exponential%20growth%20rate.

It would be hilarious if it was the Viagra if the 2020s. We tried to build Web3 social but we built AI/bot detection instead. Hotdog not hotdog.

Spot on. The real innovation often lies in solving the unseen problems. Maybe bot detection will be the game-changer for decentralized social platforms
