How big is the Universe, and does it have a shape? Or is it merely infinite? (according to us) By analysing the radiation left over from the Big Bang astronomers have found that the Universe is 13.8 billion years old ( I found it at Google ) Since light travels at a finite speed, any objects more than 13.8 billion lightyears distant are too far away for light to have travelled to us during the lifetime of the Universe. This means what we see is only 'observable Universe’, because thats the parts of the Universe we can actually see. Measurements of the motion of galaxies show that the Universe has been expanding ever since it came into existence. So, the regions of space that lie at the edge of the observable Universe are now much further away than when the light we see was emitted.

If we assume the rate of expansion has stayed the same for the last 13.8 billion years, the edge of the observable Universe would lie about 46 billion lightyears away in every direction. That makes Universe a sphere with a diameter of about 92 billion lightyears and a volume of about 410 nonillion (410 thousand billion billion billion) cubic lightyears! we can never observe anything beyond this finite limit.
