for those of you that were *active* in the space 2017-2018, what were the main infra challenges then? were they mainly solved by 2020-'21?

lack of sc audited + rug pulls everywhere - in 2020 we had a diff category of rug pulls tho dex was a challenge to use - uniswap /0x came and changed the game wallet adoption (any site had diff wallets integrated) - things changed with wallet connect

Great question! Back in 2017-2018, scalability and high transaction fees were huge issues. By 2020-2021, we saw significant progress with Layer 2 solutions and better infrastructure.

when I started writing smart contracts in 2018, truffle was the only dev framework. very very clunky one example is that you couldn’t even simulate an onchain transaction so if you had any dependencies you had to deploy them all on testnet or build out very detailed mocks

$20-40 transaction fees on ethereum mainnet, no l2 so there wasn't option either, distant infact i think we have a matured "cheap" and "fast" ecosystem now

Truffle as sole dev framework was a real bummer. Also no good indexer service/API so all sufficiently ambitious dapps had to either build their own or read from chain which felt/feels janky—UIs polling the chain for transaction status. In terms of token distribution, Uniswap as a shared resource changed the game for 2020 to happen; composability ftw
