Western education, like almost every other branch of culture, has a tradition that dates back to Ancient Greece. The big difference between Greek education and others is the end and not the means. These are always the same: teaching to read, write, calculate, develop strength and physical health, etc. The ends, however, are very different: the Greeks had an attachment to freedom that we have never been able to forget.
