I would personally not compromise on talent. If that meant I had to pay more, I would wait until I had more revenue or was able to raise money before hiring

There are many people out there that don't have obvious credentials to demand high salaries but are worth working with - esp if they align with the company and are motivated by equity. If you can afford to wait and pay for the people that have already proven themselves then this is safe for sure - but if you put the time in to discover the right person earlier in their career it'll pay off imo.
