The first high-level programming language that became widely used was called FORTRAN. It was developed in the mid-1950s by a team of IBM engineers led by John Backus. The name FORTRAN comes from the words "FORmula TRANslator" (formula translator). This language was designed for scientific computing and quickly gained popularity due to its efficiency and ease of use.
