What am I missing in the article? It’s mentioning a partnership with Мобильные ТелеСистемы — I’d assume they have a relationship with the government (who doesn’t in Russia, you’re kind of forced to), but what about the deal means what you say it means?

mts is virtually owned by russian government and now tg gives the government mapping between phone numbers and tg accounts then you can match phone number to other data from other sources and boom you have a mapping between tg account and your home address

ah, gotcha. this is one of the things i dislike about signal – though not the worst of things. at least signal has E2EE for group convos, even if an inefficient model.

agreed on signal, very much looking forward to no-cellphone signal accounts (they need to come soon) @pugson this is how you should've asked the question to get more data (no bs like "i'm already doxxed doesn't affect me haha")

I’d like to see Olvid get more traction. E2E encrypted without phone number registration. You can create as many identities as you like.

matrix has a funny way of handling group security for e2ee that effectively renders it moot though

Right! Haven’t tried Matrix yet but I will! Is there a client that uses Tor to connect to relays, or is it irrelevant with this protocol? That would be the last missing feature for privacy.
