what did degen do differently, in your opinion?

for sure, degen introduced tipping-as-airdrop-distribution. but that doesn't seem to be enough any more -- many such tipping tokens operate identically and go nowhere. giving away free money is definitely a popular launch strategy lol

the ability to tip where the tip doesn’t deplete from your wallet. Led to some interesting mechanics.

and tipping can be fun. had side effects but that’s ok. 

So the recipient gets a delight aspect of receiving something real while the sender doesn’t feel the pinch on their wallet while being cognizant that what they are giving they have limited to give and have to earn it.
