When they got into the car at home, they didn't check the back seat. The stranger got into the car as they were loading up the trunk. He covered himself under a blanket and hid there. When the husband left the car, the stranger uncovered and scared the wife to death.

Interesting that the stranger startled her to death instead of murdering her.

He was in need of a ride out of town. Harmless, not a threat, he was on the run but not dangerous and needed a way to leave without being seen. 

He saw the couple packing up the car with what looked like camping gear and knew the nearest camping area was 100 miles away.

A reasonable outcome to a strange series of events.

Absolutely! So, even though it was unintentional, he was still arrested. When the husband returned and saw his wife dead, he called the police and the stranger was taken away.
