I often pay (and subscribe) for things that I want to exist in the future. It's easier for me to pay for a future podcast episode or article, compared to something that's already there. If it's there and I can somehow get access, well, that's it, I may be tempted to donate something as a sign of gratitude, but that's it. On the other hand, when I enjoy what someone created in the past, and I feel that the only way for them to keep creating it is to make it financially profitable, I'll subscribe.
