so the difference here is the new spec supports an external link w/o needing a 302 response?

Yes! Of course the link doesn't get a frame message, so if you need to do a dynamic redirect you can still use the old method.

Do links open in the browser? Or are they GET buttons?

My problem: I want to be able to statically host frames. For example, a slide show. Or a slideshow of my recent blog (hosted on s3) posts. A frames version of my RSS feed. Right now, buttons are HTTP POST and it won't work. I don't care about the FID in this case.
