The various visual arts exist within a continuum that ranges from purely aesthetic purposes at one end to purely utilitarian purposes at the other. Such a polarity of purpose is reflected in the commonly used terms artist and artisan, the latter understood as one who gives considerable attention to the utilitarian. This should by no means be taken as a rigid scheme, however. Even within one form of art, motives may vary widely; thus a potter or a weaver may create a highly functional work that is at the same time beautiful—a salad bowl, for example, or a blanket—or may

The Pre-Raphaelites were a secret society of young artists (and one writer), founded in London in 1848. They were opposed to the Royal Academy’s promotion of the ideal as exemplified in the work of Raphael

Art21 defines contemporary art as the work of artists who are living in the twenty-first century. Contemporary art mirrors contemporary culture and society, offering teachers, students, and general audiences a rich resource through which to consider current ideas and rethink the familiar. The work of contemporary artists is a dynamic combination of materials, methods, concepts, and subjects that challenge traditional boundaries and defy easy definition. Diverse and eclectic, contemporary art is distinguished by the very lack of a uniform organizing principle, ideology, or -ism. In a globally influenced, culturally diverse, and technologically advancing world, contemporary artists give voice to the varied and changing cultural landscape of identities, values, and beliefs.

In this painting, contrast is used to perfection. An icy blue bear stands out against a warm red and yellow background. The bear appears to be thick and heavy—the result of a summer’s worth of foraging. She gazes straight toward the viewer with the midday sun creating a shine in her eyes. She appears inquisitive, perhaps thinking “do you have any food for me?” Squiggles of line and color as well as texture and geometric shapes make up the bulk of her fur. No matter where the eye wanders when gazing upon this painting, the viewer is sure to discover something new.

The Visual Arts program is developed with reference to the Victorian Curriculum and makes concurrent connections with whole-school topics being studied in classrooms. The students create two and three-dimensional artworks using a range of materials including clay, paint, recycled and natural materials. They are introduced to artworks from contemporary, historical and indigenous artists and learn to identify features of their styles.

The colours and placing of the principal images in a design may be sometimes largely decided by representational and symbolic considerations. Yet it is the formal interplay of colours and shapes that alone is capable of communicating a particular mood, producing optical sensations of space, volume, movement, and light and creating forces of both harmony and tension, even when a painting’s narrative symbolism is obscure.

It is not uncommon to see someone at an art gallery sitting on a bench admiring a painting for hours or hearing about someone spending thousands of dollars on a piece of fine art. However, what is it about art that makes people do these certain things and react in this certain way? What is the beauty of art that people can’t seem to step away from? Here are 3 reasons why art is beautiful and makes people feel different emotions

Earlier cultural traditions—of tribes, religions, guilds, royal courts, and states—largely controlled the craft, form, imagery, and subject matter of painting and determined its function, whether ritualistic, devotional, decorative, entertaining, or educational. Painters were employed more as skilled artisans than as creative artists. Later the notion of the “fine artist” developed in Asia and Renaissance Europe. Prominent painters were afforded the social status of scholars and courtiers; they signed their work, decided its design and often its subject and imagery, and established a more personal—if not always amicable—relationship with their patrons.

t’s a sad truth most artists must reconcile at some point in their creative lives: the role of the arts is constantly being questioned. Some people question whether the arts are necessary or justified, most often when the subject has to do with funding arts curricula. For others, there is no debating the belief that the arts have never been more important to our society and should be fully integrated into our lives, our community and education in general.
