Generative AI is helping me write code, make drawings and learn. Crypto is helping me make international payments, use more open social networks, and get a new class of supplementary news via polymarket. What is the metaverse doing? (Genuine question, not an attack) https://x.com/edzitron/status/1833914016240222715

I'm lucky enough to have been a Meta employee during an all-hands in which Zuck discussed his view on the metaverse. It may have changed since then, but TL;DR the claim was "we already live in a metaverse" Adopting this stance, my claim is that a metaverse (the public internet and access to it) has transformed the world, and what modern metaverse companies are doing is wandering through the idea maze to find (1) what the next set of interfaces are to interact with the metaverse (I don't know of a single person who *likes* the fact that hanging out IRL involves distractions from phones) and (2) where the limits are for how the internet can continue to provide opportunity for people that IRL can't. Crypto is currently still 0->1 but Metaverse is 1->2, so imo they can't be compared directly without some extra work to set context first

I don’t know what you consider the metaverse to be, but if it includes simulations it currently helps surgeons prepare

Do you actually draw technical diagrams with it? I haven't had much luck with that. It's great at drawing pictures of ducks playing chess or whatever, but not when I want any sort of control over the structure. Maybe I haven't found the right tool yet.

The closest i've felt to a metaverse is minecraft 2b2t. Massive world, permanent, emergent "dark forest" where you have to go way out to deep coordinates to avoid attack. I don't really see the advantage of adding a headset. I tried minecraft with oculus and got carsick. "Immersive" is 99% in the gameplay

Merge autonomous realities. We have a project going in SoP that’s exploring it. Symposium talk on it scheduled for Sept 24 if you want to join https://app.sola.day/event/detail/8672 https://summerofprotocols.com/sop24-cohort#autonomousworlds

Our team is fully remote and loving it, in very large part bc of gather.town — I know Base and Neynar are doing this too! It’s so awesome to build with that sense of “spontaneity” of a physical office, but to be able to hire from anywhere in the world!! https://warpcast.com/jessepollak/0x1d2f56e5

I spent about 10 years working in AR/VR and this question is part of why I've been so burnt out and stepped away from the industry. There are some games that really make sense in VR like Beat Saber, Super Hot, and Half Life Alyx, all of which are great. But existing games don't map to VR and you have to really design from first principles of what the device wants. That's not something big game developers are willing to do given the size of the market. And because the medium is inherently spatial it requires users to burn calories to engage with, which is not a behavior compatible with gamers as they exist today. They want to sit still and move as little as possible. Spatial movies are great on the vision pro, and video calls even though they are wonky are pretty compelling. Because of the ray traced audio it really sounds like the person is in the room with you. The added sense of presence is way better than a standard video call We've been ten years away from VR for the last ten years, still 10 years away

World of Warcraft? RuneScape? Imagine NPCs running on AI and the economy running on blockchains. People can live entire lives in those worlds and economies can have significant real world impacts. Potential disruption becomes a lot higher. Don’t think we’ve seen the last of the metaverse. I don’t think it’s begun yet tbh.

I'm finally renting out my Decentraland estate 😄 not sure how the rental economy is going, but it's a pretty cool model to finance development while earning passive income for property holders in the space. A fancy music venue got built next to my estate, which is nice. Lots of artists experimenting with funding models.

Also IMO the metaverse predates blockchain and web3. I always thought of it as the virtual lives we live online. Teens have lived out a lot of their lives in the metaverse on platforms like Habbo and second life in the early aughts and then Minecraft and Roblox.

I used to listen to Ed Zitron’s podcast. He made a lot of good points but then he started to lose me. I love skepticism, and I appreciate where he’s coming from, but he overlooks and disparages some of the things I think leftists would actually benefit from if we better understood them.

Meta is shifting to AI. The metaverse was a sad replacement for reality, not an enhancement to it. AI means a solo creator can do the work of a team, making it a reality enhancer. Yeah, there's bad stuff about it - but a lot of the complaints are rooted more in misunderstanding the technology and copyright law (which I have fundamental issues with anyway). But every tool can be used as a weapon, that doesn't mean we stop building and using new tools.
