LLMs have a hard time with questions like this because they mainly live and think in the space of tokens which are most of the time whole words. So I believe in some sense it “sees” *blueberry* as a unit, *r* as another very distinct unit with only a very tenuous connection between them.

Surprised it failed so easily. Shows how important it is to be explicit with prompt instructions. But shouldn’t GPT4 know that indexes start at zero? 🤷 it’ll get there…
