I feel like I disagree with this approach to government efficiency: https://x.com/DOGE/status/1860739165144367441 The examples listed are a tiny fraction of all spending. If a government _optimizes_ for "don't make oopses that look bad on twitter", then it will end up missing a lot of valuable opportunities, and at the same time lots of actually-wasteful large-scale things will remain just because they look respectable. You _want_ a VC-like approach on small-scale public funding, that is okay with large quantities of oopses, because its goal is to make sure it captures the 1000x opportunities. Concentrate prudence energy on the large-scale stuff.

Agree there's risk of penny wise / dollar stupid, & some of those examples are not the best (ads for the census are fine?). I think what they're trying to convey is: if gov't is allowed to mission-creep outside its defined role, it turns into a slush fund. Like it did in Afghanistan.

But these examples aren’t “ventures”. They are memorable representations of the waste that occurs when an organization lacks (1) a spirit of frugality (2) a sense of purpose. The generous interpretation is that this is a proclamation that a spirit of purposeful frugality is going to be infused into GOV.

It's almost as if DOGE is just a ridiculous facade for a small number of people channeling government money to themselves.

These are just some of the wasteful policies Eventually they should get to the biggest chunks of spending, focusing on these tiny issues surely won’t help zooming out Those account for less than $1 gained back for each US citizen lol

I don’t think $28m to license for a specific camouflage color can be compared to a “VC-like” bet on something And I think the point is more on principle than on specific items “Look at the way they spend, on both big and small. We need to change the DNA of government, and their spending”

This is why we can't have beautiful buildings. It sounds like a non sequitur, but in books like The Happy City they point out that, when materials are equivalent in cost, they opt for the more utilitarian materials to not be accused of wasting money. Money != Efficiency Shame inefficiency. Praise big swings and bureaucratic through-put.

the current concept of public goods funding in the eth ecosystem is equally ridiculous. transact more onchain and make consumers pay gas fees so you qualify for public goods.

What was spent on wars that gained nothing? I mean, IHOP is ok, but saving a half mil here is solid, but 6 trillion there for...imagination Yellowcake?
