It is fascinating how lots of people seem to genuinely have the mental association "EAs = people who are anti-technology" Of course it makes sense if 2023 AI stuff is one's first introduction to internet nerd subcultures, but even two years ago that characterization would have seemed completely incomprehensible.

It might be a direct response to the EA community somehow converging on this as *the* issue to focus on. It wouldn't be as much as an issue if this was about battling malaria.

I think that alliance has genuinely been forged in 2023. It’s not a misunderstanding or illusion. And it has been at least a half-serious joke for years (the idea that EAs think “correct” Bayesian analysis must conclude stopping AGI is the most important problem to work on… heard it first around 2018 iirc)

Especially given how many people in EA have worked in tech. Made this Venn diagram some time ago to show the absurdity of such a claim

I appreciate @nayafia ‘s take on EA as an “idea machine” … regardless of whether you agree with the EA value system, the world needs more idea machines like EA https://nadia.xyz/idea-machines

It's weird though because EA has talked about x risks for years, including bio and nuclear risks, but no one gets mad at EA for being anti-technology due to concerns over bio. I think it has a lot to do with the OSS culture meeting the x-risk culture and the two not knowing which principles apply.

I don’t think EA is anti-tech. It’s just a wealth redistribution scheme where one group of people thinks they know how to best allocate resources by taking resources from other groups. You can do it with or without tech.

not sure I agree, I'd characterize the trend as "EAs = pro-conventional tech for philanthropy, but anti-nonconventional to a politically material extreme" sort of blots out the goodwill & willingness to leave people alone to their own devices. if someone refuses the HEPA filter, do you force it on them altruistically?

Hullo, what’s the difference between a nerd and a geek? And is a neek simply nerd + geek? If a nerd and a geek walk into a bar, what happens?

People have watched the Terminator to many times since the 90's a little worried about Ai. That and who could forget Hal from 1968. Or War games .
