I actually think we're probably already at the point where the marginal bit of anti-wokeness is on balance more bad than good. (Not the same as wokeness being good, because anti-wokeness doesn't just fight wokeness, it also has many, IMO mostly bad, side effects) https://twitter.com/0FJAKE/status/1783928239099875386

Getting into any extreme way of thinking and not allowing for grey areas is dangerous. Both sides are becoming more extreme, and that's not leaving space for most ppl who are somewhere in the middle.

What’s missing from anti-wokeness is any positive description of values and preferences worth promoting.

It seems like maybe the criticism of wokeness is that some grievances are used to advocate for a misguided thing. And the excessive anti-woke response becomes an attack on voicing grievance instead of the specific proposal. So the yes-and to/synthesis might be to provide a better solution to the grievance.

Further exasperated by perverse incentives of where people express and learn these views (social media) the web2 social media world is stuck in a loop of maximizing and monetizing people’s attention to sell chipotle ads.. “the irony is not lost on us” I say as I bite my burrito

The pendulum swinging farther and farther (and capturing the most attention at each end) is my biggest fear. Extremism of any sort is generally bad for society.

I agree on the whole, the strangers/acquaintances I interact with in the Southeast who laugh about wokeness could do with some serious introspection about their preconceptions. I’ve also had a few interactions with people on the west coast that became accusations when I share loving challenges to the status quo.#gray

Could well be. Hard to say. In addition to my subjective (very possibly wrong) sense that we haven’t yet reached that point, I also think the idea that it’s getting close (rather than past) is probably more palatable to people pushing hard in that direction, on the off chance they might actually consider this view.

ironic in all of this is "anti-wokeness" is anti-history, since "woke" has long been ascribed to Marcus Garvey who said, "Wake up Ethiopia! Wake up Africa", and the Negro Mine Workers who in 1940 issued the statement, "We were asleep. But we will stay woke from now on," in advocating against discriminatory pay

Seems to me that wokeness vs anti-wokeness is a failure at synthesis. Modern wokeness can be seen as response to Right-wing dominance in economics & Left dominance in culture. It's hard for the Right to dominate in culture and for Left in economics, so result is reactionary Culture War

There is a difficult but useful exercise in considering *why* people hold conservative or anti-woke mindsets. Often because change is scary, feeling shame for being called out hurts, etc. It doesn't make the actions and beliefs any less problematic, but it does help you understand, empathize, find common ground.

Life is like a pendulum. Before i was born things were very conservative. I grew up in a golden age of moderate liberalism. Not it has swung too far to the left and there is pushback. In a generation itll swing to the middle again and shit will be nicer. Then to the conservative side. Rinse. Repeat.

We’re well past the point where “woke” is almost exclusively a pejorative term used by the right, to try to shut down whatever the conversation is. And without dialogue, cooperation in dealing with problems seems impossible. So I agree we are beyond where anti-woke has become a negative.
